International Healthcare Experiences
A number of organizations, including some with personal connections to SVU, provide opportunities to engage globally in providing care or conducting healthcare-related research. These can range from brief 1-2-week experiences up to summer-long internship programs. Most include a fee to cover the cost, though some have limited scholarship opportunities. A few we have interacted with are highlighted below, but others can be found on Handshake and elsewhere online:
- Rising Star Outreach is a program that works to provide medical care, colony development, and education to people affected by leprosy in India. It allows you to provide much needed healthcare to people in leprosy colonies while experiencing the rich culture in India. You can find more about it here
- Rising Star’s founder, Becky Douglas, spoke at an SVU Forum event in 2025. They are enthusiastic about engaging with SVU students
- Empower Through Health is an in-person global health fellowship that brings together students from American and Ugandan universities to work directly under the research mentorship of Dr. Robert Rosenheck (Yale School of Medicine) and Dr. Yang Jae Lee (University of Washington). It is a 5-week mentored research and fieldwork program conducted in rural Uganda. Participants gain hands-on field experience, mentorship in research design and publication, and the opportunity for co-authorship on a peer-reviewed paper. Learn more and apply here
