At our research center, we believe in nurturing the next generation of scientific minds. As part of our commitment to fostering academic growth and practical experience, prospective students will have the unique opportunity to be interviewed by the Head of the research center. During these interviews, students will discuss their interests and aspirations, paving the way for a personalized project assignment tailored to their academic pursuits.

One exemplary project that students may find themselves immersed in is the “Characterisation of UV-curable acrylates as coating materials for optical fibres.” In this comprehensive undertaking, participants will delve into the multifaceted world of optical fibres, exploring applications that extend beyond traditional telecommunications.

The project’s focal point is the comparison of the performance of seven distinct acrylate coatings against a benchmark coating material. The choice of UV-curable acrylates stems from their prevalence in the optical fibre coating market, attributed to their rapid curing rate, chemical versatility, and cost-effectiveness. The project’s findings are poised to complement ongoing research initiatives like the TFIN+ funded project, HiT OFCs, and the Innovate UK research project, GRIFFIN. These collaborative efforts, conducted at our institution in conjunction with external industrial and academic partners, underscore the real-world applicability and significance of the research.

In addition to their involvement in cutting-edge research, students engaged in this project will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons through a visit to the fiber draw facility at ORC located at the University of Southampton. This hands-on experience provides invaluable insights into optical fiber manufacturing processes, strengthening the students’ connection to the project’s motivation and real-world applications.

Beyond exposure to the research environment, participants will receive comprehensive training in conducting experiments within a laboratory setting. This includes hands-on experience with crucial analytical techniques such as TGA, DMA, rheometer, and FTIR. The ability to interpret complex raw data will be honed, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to the project’s outcomes.

As a culmination of their efforts, students are expected to present their findings in the form of a scientific report at the conclusion of their placement, with dedicated support from the SHU team. Furthermore, the significance of their contributions will be acknowledged through co-authorship in any resultant publications appearing in peer-reviewed journals. This immersive research experience not only equips students with practical skills but also instills in them a sense of accomplishment as they actively contribute to the scientific community.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

A dynamic interdisciplinary research institute dedicated to addressing industrial problems through the application of fundamental science and engineering. Our experienced team has a highly successful track record applying cutting edge research to find innovative solutions to industry problems. The quality of our research has been confirmed by the results of the national Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, where 56% of the submitted research received the prestigious 4* and 3* rating as world-leading and internationally excellent. From material analysis to infrastructure management our solutions generate real competitive advantage. Our research and consultancy activities are supported by a large advanced equipment base, ranging from the latest electron microscopes to high performance computing hardware.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

On-site Supervision and Support

Our internships include 24/7 on-site staff to support students working and living abroad. All students will also report to a supervisor at their internship site. Supervisors provide and oversee daily tasks, introduce the intern to team members, and mentor the intern in organizational agility, skill acquisition, and career readiness. Interns complete a midpoint and final evaluation, and supervisors complete a final evaluation of their interns. All work responsibilities and projects are approved in advance.

Academic Credit

Students on an internship have the opportunity to enroll in their home university for credit, or enroll in a course through API to transfer back to their university for credit. Email support-internships@apiexperience.com for more information and a syllabus.

Housing and Excursions

Housing and excursions are included in your internship and will be selectable during the application process.
